Introducing Our New UK Enterprise Account Executive
Alongside opening our new offices, we are delighted to introduce Waleed Salik, our latest team member. Waleed assumes the crucial role of Enterprise Account Executive for the UK. With a solid background in Business Intelligence (BI), he is exceptionally well-suited to navigate the BI landscape in the UK. His wealth of experience aligns perfectly with our mission to address the distinct requirements of our new audience.
We’ve had a chat with Waleed to get his take on the BI scene, his plans for Abylon in the UK, and why he’s excited to be on board.
First, tell us about yourself from a professional perspective. How long have you been in IT sales?
Certainly! From a professional standpoint, I’ve accumulated five years of experience in tech sales. I consider myself a specialist in this field, drawing from my background in cloud managed services, Tableau, and Data Analytics. My journey has led me to my current role as an enterprise account executive at Abylon.
Is Sales or IT Sales in line with what you studied or is it something completely different?
I initially started my journey in computer science. My path was set to become a programmer or developer. However, during my time at university, I took a project management course that shifted my perspective. I realized I didn’t want to limit myself to just coding.
As a result, I transitioned to information systems and management, which eventually led me into the world of tech sales. You might wonder how tech sales relates to project management. Well, in my view, selling a solution is akin to managing a project. Each sale becomes a project with multiple moving parts and stakeholders to coordinate, manage and keep informed. It’s all about maintaining alignment and progress.
Your previous workplace was a BI company, right? So, you’ve been in BI for a while now?
In my previous role, I worked at Interworks, a company that held the status of being a Tableau Gold Partner. Interworks specialized in full-stack business intelligence (BI) consulting. My journey into the BI realm began during my tenure at an AWS Managed Service Partner, where we were actively engaged with AWS QuickSight on a project. This marked my initial foray into the exciting world of data analytics.
At the time, cloud technologies were all the rage, and everyone was fervently exploring this space, Data analytics and BI was a hot second. My research led me to discover Interworks, and recognizing it as a fantastic opportunity, I eagerly applied. I spent approximately two years contributing to the company’s BI endeavors.
I guess you coming from a BI company aligns well with Abylon’s portfolio. Do you think that our portfolio is a good fit for the UK market?
Coming from a BI company, my background aligns well with Abylon’s portfolio. As I delved into Abylon’s offerings during my research, I discovered that they don’t merely provide BI services; they also have a robust suite of IT services.
One common challenge in BI projects arises when there’s an IT requirement. Many BI consultancies, including my previous workplace, lack specialization in the IT domain. Consequently, clients often need to seek out separate specialists for the IT aspects while engaging a consultancy for the BI side. However, Abylon stands out by offering both under one roof—a unique advantage that I believe will contribute significantly to their success in the UK market.
Another intriguing aspect is that many of the team members at Abylon have Microsoft backgrounds. This wealth of knowledge, particularly within the Microsoft stack, positions Abylon favorably for success in the UK.
Now tell us a bit about yourself. What are your hobbies?
Absolutely! Well, anyone who knows me quickly realizes that I’m a car enthusiast. I’m deeply passionate about everything related to motorsport, car upgrades, and track days. If someone I know is in the market for a new car, they often reach out to me for advice—whether it’s about choosing the right model or understanding what to look for. I’ve become the go-to person for all things automotive.
Apart from cars, I’m also a tech aficionado. I love staying up-to-date with the latest gadgets and features. You’ll often find me tinkering with new tech toys, exploring their capabilities, and figuring out how they work.
And then there’s my love for travel and food. I’m a big foodie! Whenever I visit a new place, I make it a point to dive into the local cuisine. When I was in Budapest, I asked our MD Plamen for recommendations on the best local spots. So, yes, cars, tech, and culinary adventures—that’s me!”
